Women Empowerment

Women are always in forefront of all activities organized by SAMBANDH. Women development programmes are directed towards creating awareness and their social and economical empowerment.  The condition of women in hilly areas of Uttarakhand is quite pathetic as they have to work beyond 16-18 hours a day. The hill region of Uttarakhand with difficulty agro-ecological and climatic conditions has integrated systems of farming, forestry, horticulture, and livestock and off farm activities in which contribution of women is more than 80 per cent.  In spite of their major contribution in state economy their role is still subservient. Without women, it is impossible to achieve sustainable development in mountain areas.   Realizing the pathetic condition of women, Sambandh has initiated a wide range of programs for their empowerment.  Some of them are mentioned below:

SHG Promotion and Mirco Finance:

Sambandh is actively involved in pioneering and promoting Self Help Groups in Uttarakhand and playing role in the SHG movement.

Our primary approach is to facilitate group of around 10 people belonging to the same village and sharing a common socio-economic background to form a group. These groups, commonly known as SHG, enables its members to gain their identity as individuals, while realizing – and utilizing – the immense power of mutual aid. The SHG gives them strength as collectives and provide a platform where they can access government schemes, banks and negotiate with market.

SHG’s as a basic unit work for the development of its members in a number of ways: provide guidance; give support and assistance to its members, give an identify and promote livelihoods among its members. Groups help them in link with other institutions to mobilize credit from mainstream financial institutions.

As a result of Sambandh’s efforts, an increasing number of rural families – especially women – are engaging in independent livelihood activities. These activities serve as opportunities for diversifying and enhancing their incomes. These SHG members are also taking up other activities like Vegetable cultivation, fruit plantation and goat rearing. These groups also play key role in other village development activities like watershed development and NRM.
